Tensions between the U.S. and North Korea have been rising dramatically in the past few months. Now, after North Korea tested yet another missile over the weekend, Donald Trump’s White House is calling for yet another round of sanctions against Kim Jong Un’s regime.
Conservative Tribune reported that the latest missile test occurred in the early morning hours on Sunday. Directly defying orders from the U.S., North Korea fired the Hwasong-12, which then landed in the Sea of Japan roughly 60 miles from Vladivostok in Russia.
Japanese officials told reporters that the missile flew for 30 minutes and a little less than 500 miles, hitting an “unusually high” maximum altitude of 1,240 miles. This means that Russia is now in range of Pyongyang’s military grasp.
The official state media outlet KCNA claimed that the Hwasong-12 was “capable of carrying a large-size heavy nuclear warhead. It stated that as Kim Jong Un watched the test, he “hugged officials in the field of rocket research, saying that they worked hard to achieve a great thing.”
“Let this latest provocation serve as a call for all nations to implement far stronger sanctions against North Korea,” a statement from the White House said, adding that North Korea “has been a flagrant menace for far too long.” It went on to say that the missile landed “so close to Russian soil … (that) the president cannot imagine that Russia is pleased.”
Meanwhile, China’s foreign ministry released a much softer statement.
“All relevant parties should exercise restraint and refrain from further aggravating tensions in the region,” a statement from the foreign ministry said.
